“Terminations are scary” was how Michael Hyatt
started a piece he titled “How To Fire Someone.” In this piece, he tried to
demystify the WHAT, WHEN and HOW of Termination.
1. WHAT
should we fire for? Terminate for underperformance and misconduct.
2. WHEN
should we fire? Terminate quickly.
3. HOW
should we fire? Terminate with dignity and respect.
I would like
to extend this piece by sharing the WHERE, WHY and WHO of Termination.
4. WHERE
should we fire? Terminate in private (closed doors) to enable the person show
all emotions privately.
5. WHY
should we fire? Terminate to discourage contamination of high performing and
well behaved employees.
6. WHO
should do the firing? Termination should be carried out by the Line Manager in
consultation with the Human Resource Manager.
